Custody

Are Colorado Child Custody Records Public?

In Colorado, court records are considered public records which are accessible to anyone. This is due to the Colorado Open Records Act (CORA) which ensures government and law enforcement agency records can be requested and viewed by any member of the public. This includes child custody records.

What is the Colorado Open Records Act (CORA)?

In Colorado, court records are considered public and accessible to anyone for inspection or copying. The Colorado Open Records Act (CORA), established in 1968, ensures that records held by government and law enforcement agencies are available to the public upon request. The law underwent amendments in 1974 and 1977 and is considered a cornerstone of transparency in the state. Access to public records is governed by two laws: CORA and the Colorado Criminal Justice Records Act (CCJRA). Under CORA, all public records are available for inspection at reasonable times, except where restricted by law. CCJRA governs the release of criminal justice records created or maintained by law enforcement agencies such as police departments and criminal courts.

Colorado Open Records Act (CORA)

“It is declared to be the public policy of this state that all public records shall be open for inspection by any person at reasonable times, except as provided in this part 2 or as otherwise specifically provided by law.

C.R.S. § 24-72-201

The Colorado Open Records Act was created to promote government transparency and accountability by allowing the public to access government records. If you have questions regarding your custody agreement, speak with an experienced attorney today!
