In a traditional sense, a married couple used to consist of a man and a woman. Today, LGBTQ relationships are more common than ever. With same-sex marriage legalized in the state of Colorado and California, the family structure has evolved.
Not only has same-sex marriage differentiated Colorado and California states from others in the country, but other unions have as well. The ability to merge two lives through common law marriage, domestic partnerships, and civil unions have provided a variety of ways for two people to commit to one another.
The concept of marriage has changed. Couples were expected to stay together forever after being legally bound to one another. Now, couples everywhere are separating for various reasons. As a result, divorced individuals may choose to raise their children on their own or get re-married to begin a new family. As divorce and separation have become more accepted, stepfamilies now dominate the American family standard.
Marriage isn’t the only aspect of a family structure that has evolved over the years. Children are being raised in a much different environment than ever before. Various generations of families may include step-siblings, fostered children, adopted children or children being looked after by a relative.
