Coping With The Emotional Challenges Of Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is a time of celebration for couples in love, but for those who are going through a divorce, it can be a difficult time. Facing the reality that you’re no longer in a relationship is emotional, regardless of the day. So, we wanted to provide some ways to cope with those emotions–some obvious and some not so obvious.

Find An Emotional Release

First and foremost, it’s important to permit yourself to feel whatever emotions come up. Don’t try to suppress your feelings or pretend like nothing is wrong. Cry if you need to, and don’t be afraid to talk to a friend or family member who you can trust. It is always better to deal with those emotions rather than keeping locked up inside. Even the strongest person can find relief from this effort.

Taking up new hobbies or engaging in enjoyable activities is not only a great distraction but also a means to reduce stress. Volunteering, in particular, has been shown to reduce stress levels, provide a sense of purpose, lower the risk of depression, and help in building new relationships.

Extend Mental Care

If you don’t have someone to express yourself with or need more profound help, you might consider a professional. While many people still prefer going into an office to visit with a professional, there are now online services. Companies like BetterHelp can be used from the comfort of your home. This option is more private and on-demand, which can work well for hard days like Valentine’s.

Seek More Support

Outside of friends, family, and professional services–there is always group support. There are countless organizations around that provide quality support, from online to in-person. Not only do people find the added support they need, but they also find new friends with similar circumstances.

Organizations like the Anxiety and Depression Association of America offer practical help and advice to deal with depression, anxiety, and stress often associated with divorce. They provide resources like support groups, webinars, and assistance in finding local therapists.

Be More Physical

While taking care of your mental state is a smart idea, taking care of your body is also important. Maybe Valentine’s Day is a time for you to do something that you enjoy and that makes you feel like a better person. Whether it’s taking a long walk, getting a massage, or doing some yoga, do something to take care of yourself. Step outside of your normal comfort zone and try something different. Find a new tradition or habit to indulge in now that you’re divorced.

Eating healthy foods and staying hydrated are essential in managing stress and maintaining physical health, which directly impacts mental well-being. Regular physical exercise is also a significant stress reliever. It’s recommended to engage in enjoyable physical activities at least three times a week.

Be Growth Focused

If you’re feeling supported but need something more to fill the empty time, many like to focus on personal growth. This could be starting a business you’ve been thinking about, making that job change, or even changing your home. Adding some form of forward momentum and growth to your efforts can help the healing greatly. In many cases, people find this can be the biggest change.

Setting attainable goals can instill a sense of control and optimism about the future. These goals could be related to fitness, learning new skills, or long-term aspirations. This approach helps maintain a positive outlook and forward momentum during challenging times.

Keeping Perspective

Remember that your feelings are valid and that you are not alone. Many people are going through similar experiences. Valentine’s Day can be a difficult day for those who are going through a divorce, but it’s important to remember that this too shall pass. With time, patience, and self-care, people get through this difficult period.
